Jewish Wedding Bands

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

When a Jewish couple gets married it symbolizes two souls becoming one. On this sacred day everything should be perfect, including the wedding bands. There are however, some specific guidelines on what kind of wedding band is acceptable for a traditional Jewish wedding.

The Jewish wedding band symbolizes both eternity and wholeness and as such nothing should be cut out of the band. The ring should also be made out of either solid gold or solid silver. There are also no gems permitted on the wedding band. The only decorations that are allowed are engravings on the outer band of the ring. Some popular engravings for Jewish wedding rings include the couple’s names and Hebrew sayings.

By Jewish law only the bride’s wedding band is required, but today’s couples often find it satisfying to exchange rings. The bride’s ring must also be the groom’s property at the time of the wedding.

When deciding on rings it is often helpful to look at a wide variety of styles and try some on to see how you like them. Friends and family’s wedding rings may make a good start for what styles you like. If you have to purchase the rings before you try them on it is a good idea to make sure they can be returned if there is an issue with the ring when it comes in.
